DGS POLICE TO PERFORM CHILD SAFETY SEAT CHECK

Make Sure Your Children are Riding Safely

ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 9, 2001) - Anne Arundel County parents are invited to learn the correct method to install child safety seats on Saturday, May 12 from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Sandy Spring Financial Center in Annapolis. In partnership with Sandy Spring National Bank, officers from the Maryland Department of General Services Police - certified safety seat installers - will instruct parents on how to provide better protection for their children.

The seat check will be held at 148 Jennifer Road, in the Sandy Spring Financial Center, next to Annapolis Mall. Officers will be available to answer questions about which size seat is right for what age child.

If there are children who ride in your vehicle, this event should be made a priority. 95% of children ages 4-8 are not riding safely. When used correctly, child safety seats can prevent 71% of fatalities on the road. According to Maryland safety laws, children younger than 16 years old must be secured in a safety seat or with a seatbelt at all times, and children younger than 4 years must be buckled into a safety seat. Unfortunately, not all child car seats are safe, nor do they always come with detailed directions. By attending the safety seat check, you can assure yourself and your family a safer commute and a safer arrival.
