MARYLAND WEB SITE HONORED BY NATIONAL ORGANIZATION

Maryland's electronic procurement Web site, eMaryland Marketplace (www.emarylandmarketplace.com), has been selected as a 2001 recipient of a Council of State Governments' Eagle E-government Award of Excellence.

"eMaryland Marketplace is an excellent model for other states e-government initiatives," said Ed Janairo, Program Coordinator for CSG's Eagle E-Government Awards Program. "Our judges were impressed with how the Web site makes it possible for both state and local government organizations, as well as universities, to streamline procurement and save taxpayer dollars at the same time." The e-procurement portal revolutionizes the way buyers procure goods by allowing them to make purchases or solicit bids in minutes rather than in days or weeks.

Since it's inception in March 2000, eMaryland Marketplace has posted more than $75 million on its Web site. The system has grown to include 61 State and local government agencies and more than 1,100 bidding vendors. Providing both catalog and interactive bidding, it is the first fully functional state procurement platform to move beyond the development phase. It was also the first to use a self-funding model. Additionally, eMaryland Marketplace broke ground as the first state-sponsored e-Procurement vehicle to include local governments from its inception, offering the advantages of intergovernmental aggregation from the outset.

Judges for CSG's annual contest included elected state government officials, state government staff and CSG's private sector associates. "The choice of this site as an award winner reflects the expectations and demands that practitioners in state government have of e-government," Janairo said.

Sites were judged on ease of use, design, accessibility to the public, technological innovation, and how effectively the Web site streamlines government and delivers better customer service. A complete list of this year's winners can be found at http://www.csg.org/eagle.

CSG is the nation's only organization serving every elected and appointed official in all three branches of each state and territorial government through its national office, as well as regional offices based in the East, Midwest, South, and West. CSG has championed excellence in state government since 1933 by advocating multi-state shared problem solving and states' rights, by tracking national conditions, trends, and innovations, and through nonpartisan groundbreaking leadership training and support.
