BALTIMORE (August 28, 2002) -- Despite a light rain, dozens of people were in line buying produce and flowers today as Maryland's newest farmer's market was officially opened at the Baltimore State Office Center. Promoted jointly by the Maryland Departments of Agriculture (MDA), General Services (DGS) and Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), the farmer's market will be open every Wednesday through November from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the sidewalk at 300 West Preston Street in Baltimore.

    “Having a farmer's market at the State Office Center will allow State employees, as well as people from the surrounding midtown neighborhoods, convenient access to Maryland's farm fresh products,” said DGS Secretary Peta N. Richkus. “This is a part of what the “Smart Growth” concept is all about, finding your needs in a community setting and not having to always use a car.”

    Before a large group of State employees, MDA Secretary Hagner R. Mister said, “We are pleased to help Maryland farmers and farm products reach more consumers. Supporting Maryland agriculture in this manner reminds people that Maryland has some of the best produce to be found anywhere and we want people to take advantage of it.”

    “The opening of this market is exciting,” said DHMH Deputy Secretary Arlene Stephenson. “Employees on their lunch break and people in the community can now take advantage of purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables from Maryland farmers simply by walking a short distance from their homes or place of work. The Department’s “5-A-Day ” program’s theme ties directly into this market – good food, good health.”
