Baltimore (October 28, 2002) - As the holiday season approaches, a limited number of products from Maryland's famous Wye Oak tree will be available for purchase. The Wye Oak, estimated to be 460 years old when it fell during a storm last June, was the nation's largest white oak.
Only 400 pins made from the Wye Oak's original leaves will be available for purchase at this time. The natural leaves were carefully collected and dried in a way that preserved the leaf's natural veining and shape. To protect them forever, the leaves are covered with copper, and finished in a green/blue patina that will mellow over time to a blue/bronze patina. The leaves measure between 3 inches and 5 inches and are certified as Wye Oak leaves. Prices range from $42.00 to $45.00, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Wye Oak Commeroration Project.
The products available for purchase are the result of a Department of General Services contract with Rockville-based Nature's Creations, Inc. The jewelry may be purchased online at www.wye-oak.com.
Additionally, a limited number of original Wye Oak leaves (non-jewelry) preserved through a special electroplating process will be available for purchase November 1 at the Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden in the Tawes State Building at Taylor Avenue and Rowe Boulevard in Annapolis.
