ANNAPOLIS (February 19, 2003) - Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. today announced Board of Public Works approval of a State grant to help construct a new Nursing and Allied Health Building at Carroll Community College (CCC). The $2.7 million grant is part of a $4,252,000 construction contract that will help the Westminster campus offer nursing and allied health programs to the community, thereby helping to remedy Maryland's nursing shortage.
“I am committed to providing a first-class learning environment at every level of education. Our community colleges provide important economic and educational opportunities for students and families across Maryland,” said Governor Ehrlich. “By investing in Carroll Community College’s expansion, we can attract and retain new jobs while addressing the state’s growing nursing shortage.”
The project involves the construction of a new two-story, 28,000 square-foot building. The exterior will be red-orange brick with a blue standing-seam roof and cast stone trim. A storefront glazing system will provide natural light into most occupied spaces. The building will be connected to the Great Hall with a new connecting link. The first floor will have permanent faculty offices, two classrooms, an emergency medical care lab, and mechanical and support space. The second floor will feature space for adjunct faculty, classrooms, multi-media learning labs, a nursing lab, a physical therapy lab and the Allied Health and Office Lab and a large student study lounge overlooking the central courtyard.
"This new facility underscores the strong partnership between local and State government in Maryland," said Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele. “By working together we ensure that Carroll Community College has a first-class facility that serves the community well into the future.”
More than 2,800 students pursue studies at CCC in a variety of academic programs leading to transfer to four-year colleges or immediate employment upon graduation. The Board approved award of the contract to Tech Contracting Company, Inc., of Baltimore. Construction will begin in April with completion expected in Summer 2004.
CCC President Dr. Faye Pappalardo said, “We are excited about this new addition to our campus. The new instructional building gives us the opportunity to better serve our growing student population. I salute the Governor and the General Assembly for supporting the mission of the college – providing top-quality education that is easily accessible and affordable.”
The Maryland Department of General Services' Project Management and Design Division reviews community college construction projects. In FY 2002 and in FY 2003 to date, 55 community college contracts valued at more than $ 116.8 million have been awarded across the State.
