STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT BUILDING IN BALTIMORE REOPENS

Water Main Break Repaired Last Night; Employees Return to their Offices Today

BALTIMORE (August 10, 2004) – All employees of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) who work at the Herbert R. O’Conor State Office Building should report to work today (Tuesday). The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) announced last night that a water main break which forced the Monday closing of the building at 201 West Preston Street in Baltimore had been repaired.

DGS Facilities Operations and Maintenance staff worked with contractors to ensure repairs to the cracked 10-inch, 30-year-old water main would be made in time for the opening of business today. The damaged water main sustained both radial and lateral cracks. Crews cut away a section of the main and attached stainless steel clamp couplings to complete the repairs.

The break, discovered by DGS staff early Monday morning, caused no damage to the facility which serves as DHMH hedquarters. The building, which houses almost 2,000 State employees, was closed around 9:15 a.m. Monday and all but non-essential employees were dismissed for the day.
