BALTIMORE (September 20, 2004) – The Maryland Department of General Services announced today that the six buildings closed as a result of the underground fire overnight in downtown Baltimore will reopen Tuesday morning. The fire caused electric power outages, which caused more than 1,400 State employees to be sent home at the start of the business day Monday.
Reopening Tuesday morning will be the Workers’ Compensation Commission at 10 East Baltimore Street ; the Maryland Insurance Administration headquarters at 525 St. Paul Place ; the Shillman Building at 500 North Calvert Street , which is headquarters for the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. Shillman also houses the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s AIDS Administration and District Court Commissioner’s offices.
Additionally, power has been restored to the Public Defender’s Building at 201 St. Paul Place ; the District Court facility at 500 East Fayette Street ; and a Department of Housing and Community Development unit at 19 East Fayette Street .
State employees who work in these facilities should report to work Tuesday morning at their regularly scheduled times.
