BALTIMORE (September 27, 2004) – The Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) announced today that Internet registration for Maryland’s new Small Business Reserve program is underway.

“The establishment of the Small Business Reserve program demonstrates my commitment to the growth, opportunity and prosperity of Maryland’s economy,” said Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. “This program reinforces the message that under the Ehrlich-Steele Administration, Maryland is open for business.”

The program, which becomes effective October 1, 2004, requires that 22 State agencies structure their procurement processes so that at least 10 percent of their total procurement dollars are spent with qualified small businesses.

“The newly established Small Business Reserve program will enhance opportunities for small business owners,” said Lt. Governor Michael S. Steele. “This program will lead to more community-based businesses, more job opportunities and a better quality of life in Maryland.”

Vendors may register as a small business by accessing the DGS web site at www.dgs.state.md.us and then click on the “Small Business Reserve” button. The site also provides information on the new program and answers frequently asked questions. The Small Business Reserve program staff is also available to answer questions at 410-767-4270.
