LEXINGTON, KY (April 7, 2005) -- The National Association of State Facilities Administrators (NASFA) has announced the Maryland Department of General Services (DGS) is a finalist for the NASFA 2005 Innovations Award. DGS submitted its highly-successful “Reverse Energy Auction” as its entry for the national honor.
“When he took office, Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. mandated innovative approaches to running government,” said DGS Secretary Boyd K. Rutherford. “Governor Ehrlich especially sought significant energy savings and this program accomplishes that goal.”
The Internet-based “Reverse Energy Auction” is allowing the State to cost avoid $5 million a year in electricity costs. As one of the biggest power users in the State, the Reverse Auction was designed to allow the State to lock-in the lowest possible electricity costs before price caps expired in summer 2004.
Maryland joins Massachusetts’ “Accelerate the Disposition of State Property” program and Virginia’s “Construction Recycling” program as finalists for the NASFA award. The national winner will be announced in June at the NASFA National Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.
